Author Jeanne Ann Vanderhoef will be visiting Crawfordsville with her family to sign copies of her books and talk about her life. Light refreshments will be provided. Admission to the Carnegie Museum is free.

Daughter of Kent Lambert and Janet (Maude Snyder) Lambert, Jeanne Ann was born in Crawfordsville in 1918. She attended the University of Missouri and then moved with her parents to New York City, where her father was serving in the 61st Cavalry Division. Kent Lambert led the last Cavalry charge of WWI and later became the Post Commander at Governors Island, New York. Jeanne Ann was a model for John Powers until her marriage to Dean T. Vanderhoef, a new graduate of West Point. After World War II, her husband became an intelligence officer and a Russian linguist, and the family, which now included a son and young daughter, moved to post-war Germany. A second daughter was born in Munich. After three years of living in Germany, the family returned to the U.S. until 1956 when they were transferred to Bangkok, Thailand. The Bangkok assignment served as the inspiration for Jeanne Ann's first book, Gibbons in the Family Tree. Jeanne Ann published her second book, Hard Road to Heaven, in 2011. She says her most recent book is based on her own memories plus the stories of others who shared their war-time experiences with her during her years in Germany.

Janet Lambert was born Maude Snyder in Crawfordsville in 1893, daughter of Francis L. Snyder and Mabel Galey Snyder. Her father was the first Supreme Scribe of the Tribe of Ben Hur fraternal order. In 1916, she began a stage career, appearing in productions with William Powell and Franklin Pangborne. She married Crawfordsville native Kent Lambert on New Year's Day, 1918, and changed her name from Maude Snyder to Janet Lambert. Despite hopes that he would remain stateside, he was sent to Europe to serve in World War I several months later. While her husband was away, Janet returned home to Crawfordsville to await the birth of her daughter, Jeanne Ann, who was born later that year. Her theater career ended with the birth of her daughter. Despite several years of serious medical issues resulting from her daughter's birth, Janet accompanied her husband to his military assignments, and spent much time with her daughter. When Jeanne Ann went away to college, Janet began to write seriously, selling her book, Star Spangled Summer to E.P. Dutton in 1940. She wrote 54 young adult best-sellers over the course of her literary career.

Genealogy Club meeting

The Genealogy Club of Montgomery County will meet on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Book Munchers

Don't forget that CDPL has a program, Book Munchers, aimed at home-schooled students!

Celebrating National Library Week: Interlibrary Loan

Have you ever tried Interlibrary Loan?

It's nice to be able to find in your library all the items you want to check out. But what if we don't have what you want? Well, then you should consider using our Interlibrary Loan service.

This is just another way that your library can serve you!

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

If the Crawfordsville District Public Library does not own the book, video, or article that you need, we can try to borrow it from another library through the Interlibrary Loan service.

Who can use the ILL service?

This service is offered to all patrons holding a valid library card from the Crawfordsville District Public Library (does not include RB cards). You must have no outstanding fees or overdue items. Patrons must be 18 or older to request an interlibrary loan. Those under 18 can also request an interlibrary loan if they have parental permission.

How long does it take to get an ILL?

Most loans can be received within 10-14 days. You will be informed as soon as possible if a loan can't be made for some reason.

How long can I keep ILL materials?

The average loan period is 2 weeks or longer, depending on the wishes of the loaning institution. The late fee for an ILL item is 50 cents per day.

What is the cost?

The service is free; this cost is underwritten by the Friends of the Library. If the lending library specifies that it requires costs for photocopies or mailing a particular requested item, patrons will be consulted before materials are borrowed.

What can I borrow?

You may request items not owned by the Crawfordsville District Public Library or items missing from the library's collection. You may not request items owned by the library.

What is my ILL limit?

You are limited to 10 requests at a time.

How do I make an ILL request?

•You can make a request at the Reference Desk in person or by phone (362-2242 ext. 117).

•You can e-mail our ILL staff: ill@cdpl.lib.in.us

•You can use FirstSearch on any computer in the library. Ask a librarian for assistance, if necessary.

Author visit: James E. Rady

Meet the author of A Time to Forgive and Love Finds a Way at the Crawfordsville District Public Library.

Author James E. Rady will be at CDPL on Wednesday, April 18th from 6-8pm.

James Edward Rady, a Hoosier poet/author was born on a farm in Indiana and reared in the community of Roachdale. He graduated from Roachdale High School and earned BA and MS degrees from Indiana University. He retired from a career in Indiana schools as a teacher/administrator. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and retired from a career in the U.S Army, serving during the Korea and Vietnam wars. He has written and edited Bible Study material, Sunday School lessons, Tracts, educational newsletters, brochures, and booklets. He hosted a radio news and cable TV talk show on education. He has published three books of poetry, and at the age of 85, with his collection of original letters from a Civil War soldier, he completed his first novel, Love Finds A Way. His second novel, A Time to Forgive, was completed at age 88. He and his wife make their home in Lima, Ohio.

 In addition to his latest novels, CDPL also has Rady's books of poetry in our Local History collection.

Celebrating National Library Week: Searching the Catalog

You may already know that you can search the library catalog from the library or from home any time  you want in order to find anything you want! Searching can be frustrating, however, because a library catalog needs your help (what we are saying, we suppose, is that a library catalog is not as easy to use as Google!). But if you use some basic strategies, you can greatly increase the chances of finding exactly what you are looking for.

One of the most useful features of the catalog is the Limit by filter that allows you to narrow your search to a particular type of material.

For example, if you wanted to find books about dinosaurs for children but did not want to scroll through DVDs or adult non-fiction books, use the Limit by filter and choose "Juvenile beginner books" before clicking Go.

The Limit by filter is just one of the ways you can improve any search. For more help, feel free to ask any librarian on duty or call the Reference Desk at 765-362-2242 ext 117.

Fun With Police Sketches

Have you ever had trouble picturing a character from a novel? Brian Joseph Davis has a solution. On his Tumblr blog, The Composites, Davis uses law enforcement composite sketch software to bring your favorite characters to life, using descriptions from the book. Don't just wonder what Humbert Humbert (Lolita, Vladimir Nabakov) looked like, find out exactly how creepy he is. (On the other hand, it can be a little strange when you already have an idea of a character and the sketch is not the same, like the one of Edward Rochester of Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte.) Learn about Pakistan's culture

IREX Global Undergrad Program, a program sponsored by the U.S. State Department, has sent Tayyab Rauf of Pakistan to Wabash College for a semester of study. He is to get to know American culture and he would like to share his own culture with us.

Rauf will be at CDPL on Thursday April 12th at 5pm to share Pakistan's traditions, music, sports, famous personalities, and much more. This program is aimed at both children and adults and is sponsored by CDPL.
