Read an Award-Winning Book!

The 2013 National Book Awards were announced on November 20! Check out fiction winner James McBride's The Good Lord Bird. McBride tells the story of a young slave traveling with abolitionist John Brown. Henry, the slave, is mistaken for a girl, taken from his master by Brown, and gives a first-hand account of the raid on Harper's Ferry.

Cynthia Kadohata won the Young People's Literature prize for The Thing About Luck. Just when twelve-year-old Summer thinks nothing else can possibly go wrong in a year of bad luck, an emergency takes her parents to Japan, leaving Summer to care for her little brother while helping her grandmother cook and do laundry for harvest workers.



The Unwinding: an Inner History of the New America by George Packer won the nonfiction award. Through an examination of the lives of several Americans and leading public figures over the past three decades, Packer portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation.


Younger readers can find the newest Young Hoosier Book Award nominees in Children's Services.  There are books on a variety of topics for any age.

Mystery Book Club

Join Sandra Salazar on November 19 at 6pm for a dicussion about "The case of the Missing Servant," by Tarquin Hall. "A prominent lawyer who asks Puri to find a missing servant is arrested for the young woman's murder when her body is found, requiring complex work by Puri's staff. Meanwhile, he must check out the squeaky-clean fianc of the granddaughter of a revered war hero. And Puri's visiting Mummy-ji undertakes her own search when her son is shot at."

Knit/Crochet Class

Knit Yoga Socks or Crochet Snowflakes
Tuesday, October 29, 6pm.
According to Instructor Sandra Salazar, this is a very easy knit or crochet that anyone can do and have done well before Christmas. If you would like to knit, bring three or four small scrap balls of worsted weight yarn in clearly contrasting colors (red, blue, green, yellow or black, white, orange and pink) and size 6 or 7 needles. To crochet, bring a ball of bedspread weight thread and a crochet hook about size 7.
Cost is $5 for the class.

In the Gallery: Mark Allan Craig

This month’s gallery display in the Mary Bishop gallery features the artwork of Mark Allan Craig. Mark was a Crawfordsville resident who worked in merchandising at Macy’s in Lafayette for many years. Mark’s artistic talents first attracted attention in 1990 while he was a student at Rantoul High School in Illinois, when his artwork was selected to be shown in a gallery at the University of Illinois. His grandfather Fox bought him a drawing table to encourage his talents, and at that time, Mark realized that he wanted to become an illustrator. While Mark was attending Knob Noster High School in Knob Noster, Missouri, he received a ribbon for his pen-and-ink rendering of a falcon. After he graduated from high school, he attended art classes at Central Missouri State University for three years and also at Ivy Tech in Lafayette.

Mark was killed October 1, 2012 in a car crash in Montana, on his way to begin a new life in the state of Washington. Mark was in the process of moving to be near his fiancée, and planned to attend Green Forks Community College to fulfill his dream of becoming a commercial artist.

At this 1^st anniversary of Mark’s death, his parents, Roger and Dellie Craig, and his fiancée Deana, celebrate Mark’s talents with others through his artwork. It is their hope that through this display, children will be encouraged to express themselves through their art.

Mark was a hero to his family. His decision to become an organ and tissue donor has meant that a 9-year-old American girl and a 28-year-old European man can now see. His gift of his organs and tissues will continue into the future, with an estimated 100 people expected to be blessed by his legacy.
