three girls. three stories. one show

three girls. three stories. one show

three girls. three stories. one show
they found themselves talking on tin can and string phones. back and forth. each bright eyed and wanting to hear each other's story.
they couldn't believe they lived in the same mid town. found in the middle of this big. ole'. world. three girls. three stories. one show.
each using the tools and treasures they come across in this life.

to color outside of the lines. to wear golden yellow tights. to paint their hair pink. red. yellow.

stories of life. love. faith.
c'ville public library. kelly barton. nina cunningham. tracy smoll.

entire month of november.
enjoy.

kelly barton --- www.kellybarton.com
she skipped into the world. her accessories - big eyes of blue - and blonde tendrils. her beloved jimmy penned her as irish. a rare descriptive carried by her sass. and the lands that walked before her.

her grandmothers guided her with kisses. warm eats. and a view of their strength as they walked through their own days. she rode banana seat bikes. nibbled long strips of taffy - poolside as her skin turned golden. she felt the love from him and her. some days choosing to ignore it.
slowly she began to find her voice. the one that had been missing. the one that spoke the loudest. and rested deep in a little pocket reserved for such goodness. a stick full of bristles and hairs dips into color. and opens up her life.

her odd composition calls to them them through the glass. it shouted to LOVE WIDE. a phrase unknown at the time but familiar. upon closer inspection. the waves of distain became calm.
she walks through this mid earth town. carrying a simple box of blooms filled with tools for the day. footprints fading pink behind her. some don't understand her but that doesn't seem to matter. she wears her wings. the souls of her shoes...

nina cunningham --- www.9-ah.com
and she was a shy. hazel eyed. brown - haired girl. she liked to cut her hair but one day there wasn't any more to cut. so she painted it red.
she was born in the rural of new york. she grew up surrounded by dairy cows. rolling hills. and rivers. when she moved to this little mid town. she discovered that the scenery had changed to fields of corn. often when she told people she was from new york. they talked of the big apple. that big city. she would say no and told them she had never seen the statue of liberty.
but then she always added.  "there's always next week."
she discovered early on that she wanted to BE an artist. and her grandpa saw it in her doodles. she was grateful.
she never liked to bake. but she always liked to paint. and her favorite color was the same as that mid earth kindred. pink. not because of pleasantry of color but because of a gift. a gift of grace. pink grace.
she liked to look for hearts on the sidewalk. and she picked up items from the ground. looked at them on the palm of her hand. the discarded trash became her tiny treasures. she would bring them home. paint them all one color. and then glue them inside boxes...
tracy smoll --- www.smollthings.com
she watched with wide eyes of green. as her grandma cleared the dining room table and carefully opened the tissue patterns of paper. the carbon paper. the pinning of the patterns. the shears cutting through layers of calico. were magical.

she watched again as her grandma crocheted a pineapple stitch - in soft colors while watching the evening news. with much excitement and anticipation she opened her gifts. easel. paints. sewing box. and a record player. and it was blissful. as if opening gifts of empathy. love. and vision.

she created. loom potholders. dresses made of curtains. particular t-shirts. and paint. by. number owls.and then. she chose to share her art with the small ones. they would smile. and paint. and snarl. and draw. she would smile. and gush.
for her own self. she could choose any medium she desired. and she chose it all. it was fiber. it was paint. it was pen. and it was clay. but now. she chooses the earth. to express self...

Purdue Extension Webinar

Incorporating climate change impact into community planning efforts

Purdue Extension Montgomery County
Educational Webinar at Crawfordsville District Public Library
Monday, September 17th 7:00-9:00 p.m.

The Purdue Extension is hosting a webinar on incorporating climate change impact in community planning efforts on Monday, September 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm. Climate change can involve various types of extremes in weather impacting a community. The floods of 2008 caused significant damage in many communities and gained a lot of attention. Certainly the heat and drought of 2012 is an example of severe weather extremes. Two communities will share their planning efforts for climate change in the future particularly as it deals with flooding and flood plain developments. Staff from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant will discuss resources available to communities for climate impact planning.

The program can be viewed at designated Extension Offices around the state. Interested viewers with DSL or faster internet connections can also view the program live. For more information about the program, contact Montgomery County - Purdue Extension Office. 765-364-6363 or via email: Joy: jvanest@purdue.edu Autumn: alcline@purdue.edu

New Non-Fiction DVDs from PBS

Houdini

Wrapped in chains and encased in a crate, magician Harry Houdini was dropped into New York's icy East River. Horrified onlookers watched him emerge, unharmed, less than 60 seconds later. Easily the world's most famous escape artist, Houdini mesmerized audiences with astonishing acts of magic like the Water Torture Cell. A circus performer turned gifted artist, Houdini confronted humanity's greatest fears: entrapment, pain, and death.

Freedom Riders

This inspirational documentary is about a band of courageous civil-rights activists calling themselves the Freedom Riders. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, it chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of youth and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds.

The Interrupters

The moving and surprising stories of three Violence Interrupters who, with bravado, humility, and even humor, try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. Shot over the course of a year, this documentary captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in America's cities.

The Buddha
Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion..

The Amish
Explores the insular religious community, whose intense faith and adherence to 400-year-old traditions have by turns captivated and baffled Americans for more than a century. The film examines the beliefs, lifestyle, and history of the Amish, as well as their complex relationship to mainstream American culture. The Amish is part history, part observational documentary that takes viewers into the world of the Amish.

Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee, the leading Confederate general of the American Civil War, remains a source of fascination and, for some, veneration. This film examines the life and reputation of the general, whose military successes made him the scourge of the Union and the hero of the Confederacy, and who was elevated to almost god-like status by his admirers after his death.

Happy Birthday, Malcolm Gladwell!

Malcolm Gladwell celebrates his birthday on September 3. Born in England in 1963, but raised in Canada, Gladwell has been a longtime journalist for the New Yorker. He even once was a writer for the conservative journal The Spectator and lived in Indiana.

When Gladwell started at the New Yorker he set out to "mine current academic research for insight, theories, direction or inspiration." His first book The Tipping Point, examines when and why major changes happen in society. The "Tipping Point" is a term used in epidemiology to explain when a virus reaches a critical mass and begins to spread at a higher rate.

He has written three additional books that can be found at CDPL -- Blink, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw. In the Outliers he proposes that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become proficient and successful. One example he uses of this is the famous rock group the Beatles. They honed their music skills with at least 10,000 hours of performance in small venues in Germany before hitting the big time.

In the Gallery: The Moment It Clicks

The Moment It Clicks: Photography of Kim Johnson
The Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library presents the extraordinary work of local photographer Kim Johnson. The photo exhibit The Moment It Clicks runs through August 29th. When asked about her thoughts on Photography Kim responded, "Photography allows me to cling to the awe that I feel when I am looking right at the face of God through a new baby, a butterfly, or a tree in the fall, or when I am capturing God's laughter through a family that is happy to be together, or discovering again God's amazing creation in a pair of sparkling blue eyes."

Kim Johnson was raised in Crawfordsville, received her Bachelor's and Masters degrees from Purdue. She explains how she became interested in photography, "Photography has always been a hobby but really began to take shape when I started shooting my own photos for the marketing work I was doing. I became involved in a local art show, sold a few pieces, and started getting requests to take portraits for friends. Since then I continue to fall more in love with photography every time the shutter clicks.

"My "day job" in the Communications Office at Wabash College is intertwined with writing, design, and photography. I am also a wife and the mother of a four-year-old that, like most four-year-olds, does not stop moving unless she is asleep."

Kim says she has two simple goals with my photography: "bring glory to God by helping people capture the big and small miracles of life – because truly, every moment we continue to move and breathe and love and live is a miracle; and second, to walk away from every shoot saying "that was the best work I have done." Her work, as demonstrated by the over 100 images in the gallery, proves that she is achieving those goals.

The Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public is located at 205 S Washington Street in Crawfordsville. Hours for the gallery are the same as the public library hours, Monday through Thursday 9 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm.

In the Gallery

Nature Personified
(To conceive of/or represent as an artist has in an interpretation of subjects viewed)
By Shirley Biddle-Freeman

Her work is on display in the Mary Bishop Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Library through July 30th.

Shirley Biddle Freeman, an Indiana Artist, is mostly self-taught, even though she has been privileged to study with some of the finest painters in the United States of America and Mexico. She considers it a gift from God to be able to share her talent and education with student artists in classes and workshops in many states. No greater joy is felt than when others feel a sense of happiness when viewing their paintings and seeing the delight in the eyes of her students when they understand the process of watercolors. The greatest reward is enjoying the creative ability not only for health of body and mind, but for what we can share with others. Her work has been accepted in state, regional and national juried shows some of which include The Oil Painters of America (OPA), The Wabash Valley Watercolor Society, BRAC, Seneca SC. The Hoosier Salon, and the Watercolor Society of Indiana (WSI) of which she has reached signature status.
This Internationally known artist's paintings can be found in private and corporate collections in most of the fifty United States, including Government offices in Washington D. C. also in Australia, Puerto Rico & many European countries.

Shirley Biddle-Freeman has had solo shows in multiple states and participated in group exhibitions in many more. She has also been featured in many magazines and on television.

Traditionally Rooted Contemporary Elegance
Stonework and Bronzes
By Fine Artist Valerie Jean Shafer

In my sculpture, I tend to take a less is more approach. I believe that by paring a thing down to its essence, the spirituality behind it more easily revealed to the viewer. The simplicity of these forms, even those inspired by ancient American artifacts, evokes a sense of elegance with a decidedly contemporary feel. My home and studio happen to be located on the exact spot the last forced removal of Native Americans from Indiana began in 1838. This reality has encouraged my exploration into my own Cherokee heritage and inspired a body of work that draws upon a form vocabulary of American Indian artifacts from prehistory. They silently speak of the beauty of Native American culture beyond the usual stereotypes, and reveal Indians as the inhabitants of the Americas far longer that most people believe. Many correspond to universal archetypes, bearing similarities in both appearance and function to other prehistoric stone implements from around the world – suggestive of a commonality in the development of humankind. Others, like birdstones, are quintessential relics communicating a uniquely North American indigenous perspective.

Whether small artifacts lying in a cornfield, or large sculptures prominently displayed, these intriguing forms have a strong impact on their surrounding environment. The essence of spirituality is ever present to the viewer. By sharing my reverence for these objects, the motives behind which span from a matter of survival to the expression of the sacred, it is my hope to engage the viewer in a dialogue that will expand awareness of and appreciation for the beauty and complexity of ancient Indian culture.

My formal education includes holding a Bachelor of Science in Fine Art degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana: an Associate in Science in Education degree from Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana; and several years of study in bronze casting at Indiana University in South Bend.
