Three Strikes of the Match
The 237th anniversary of the most important day in American history is coming up! On April 19, 1775, the Revolutionary War began, and on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, the Revolutionary War Veterans Association will sponsor a program at the Crawfordsville District Public Library. Join us from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Donnelly Room as we discuss the events and people whose decisions and actions shaped and still define us as a nation. Alan Metsker will answer questions such as...
- When and where was the American Revolution fought and won?
- When and where did the Revolutionary War actually start?
- What caused the British Army to break and run after a two minute encounter with colonial farmers and shopkeepers?
- Who fired the first shots of the Revolutionary War?
- What's the difference between history and heritage?
Go back in time to when
"Give me liberty or give me death!"
was more than just a saying.

New Non-Fiction: It's All About the Dress
Selecting a bridal gown for that very special BIG Day can be painful and discouraging. Randy Fenoli, fashion director at Kleinfeld and star of TLC's Say Yes to The Dress, has a new book that can guide the soon-to-be bride with this important decision and avoid the distress.
Randy counsels brides to define their story and determine how they want to feel and look in “The Dress” for their special day. He advises brides to consider what they want the dress to say to their guests.
Anyone who has watched Randy in action on TLC knows how smoothly he handles difficult situations that he refers to as “challenges.” He offers his rules and suggestions throughout his book, It's All About The Dress. The photographed models are not professionals, but real brides in their actual dresses that Randy helped them select.
If purchasing the perfect wedding dress is something in your future, this book will prepare you for that momentous occasion. As Randy states “a wedding dress is worn once, but photographed forever.”

New Books on Babies
$204,060 is what the federal government estimates it costs to raise a child born in 2010 until 2028. Even that may not really count the cost of daycare and post secondary school. But nevertheless Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Baby Bargains have help for parents worried about the high cost of children.
Their book guides parents wanting to buy "quality at a discount." They propose 7 commandments to follow:
1.Safety is job ONE - avoid used cribs and car seats as safety requirements change
2.Focus on the Basics - your mission is to have a safe place for baby to sleep and ride in the car
3.Weed out the Fluff - take an experienced parent along when shopping to help select the necessary items
4.Two words: Free Money - take advantage of employer sponsored dependent care accounts and other tax deductions or credits
5.More Freebies - new parents often receive discounts to entice them into stores
6.Shop at stores that don't include Baby in their name - places like discount stores that are not specially catering to babies may have better prices
7.Online Shopping Savvy -use those coupons for free shipping and discounts before ordering online. Monitor the free message boards at BabyBargains.com.
They state that their focus is on safety and durability. Two factors that interest every new parent!
Also new to the library is Baby 411, an easy-to-use guide with answers and advice for your baby's first year.

March is Women's History Month!
This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is Women’s Education-Women’s Empowerment, a subject that is at the heart of the work of one of the first feminists. Mary Wollstonecraft was born in England in 1759. Mary struck out on her own at an early age to work, eventually setting up a school with her sisters and friend Fanny Blood. When the school failed and Mary became dissatisfied with her options for employment, she decided to become a writer. She was in France during the Revolution and wrote An Historical and Moral View of the French Revolution, which was published in 1794. Her most famous work, though, was A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects. Written in 1792, Wollstonecraft argues that women should be educated since they will in turn educate children, and women can and should be equals to men in some areas of life. Mary’s dramatic personal life overshadowed her work for years after her death (she had numerous love affairs and an illegitimate daughter in addition to her daughter with philosopher William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, author of Frankenstein) but her ideas found life again with the women’s suffrage movement in the late nineteenth century. (Read about Crawfordsville’s own famous suffragist, Elizabeth Boynton Harbert, at our Local History blog).
Visit the library and check out Mary Wollstonecraft for yourself. Lyndall Gordon’s Vindication: A Life of Mary Wollstonecraft was on the New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2005 list. A fictional account of Mary’s life, Vindication, was written in 1993 by South Bend teacher Frances Sherwood. And Mary’s most influential work can be found through interlibrary loan or as a free download from google books.
