St. Bernard's Church...on Washington Street?

The library has recently obtained a postcard of one of Crawfordsville's historic structures: St. Bernard's Catholic Church. This church, which sat on the corner of Washington and Pike Streets (where Chase Bank is now) was dedicated with much fanfare in 1876. The date written on the postcard -- 1874 -- is not the date of the picture, however, but rather the beginning of the construction. If you take a closer look at the postcard, you can see tracks running down the middle of Washington Street, and wires overhead. These tracks and wires were for the interurban trains that began servicing Crawfordsville in the early years of the 20th century. This view is one of the rare clear images that remain of the now demolished church.

Photography books

New to the world of digital photography? CDPL has several books to guide one on this adventure!

Craig Alesse in his book Don't Take My Picture: How to Take Fantastic Digital Photos of Family and Friends (And Have Fun Too) advises photographers to take lots of pictures and from various angles. He lists pointers on devising picture compositions, taking group shots, capturing kids at their best, and many other topics.

This book and many other photography books can be found in CDPL's non-fiction collection. Borrow some now to start capturing digital lasting memories.

Agriculture in Montgomery County!

Opening to the public on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County, this exhibit will cover the history of Agriculture in Montgomery County as well as the state of Agriculture today.

To create this exhibit we need your help. If you have photographs of the Montgomery County Fair or photographs of local people at the Indiana State Fair, the museum would be interested in borrowing them for the exhibit. Also, old farm tools, maps, Almanacs, FFA Jackets and more are needed to complete the visual picture of Montgomery County Agriculture. Any items from the 1979 Farm Progress Show here in the county would be most welcome. Items can be donated to the museum or loaned to the museum for the duration of the exhibit.

In the Gallery -- January

Checkout the display at the Mary Bishop Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library highlighting the work of Crawfordsville school children!

The display features work from students in kindergarten through high school. There will be a special reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the library before the Crawfordsville School Corporation's monthly board meeting, which will be in the basement.

The Gallery wil display the artwork through the end of January.

Library Pavilion Progress

Knitting for Beginners

Every Saturday in January from 9am until 11am, Dixie Boyles will offer beginning knitting classes.  Each class costs $5 (entire session of $20 is payable at first class).  There is also a one-time purchase of a start-up kit for $6. The kit includes needles, yarn, and pattern.

Learn a skill and have some fun while learning from an expert!

New library catalog

Have you seen our new catalog? You may not have noticed much difference yet--until you use it--because at first glance it looks the same. But you will notice some of its improved features!  For example, the new catalog will now provide drop-down help when you start to type.

Looking for something on Donnelley and Sons? Just start typing to see some of the typing hints -- based on actual catalog records. Then you can choose one of the suggestions or simply ignore it and keep typing. You can even select to hide suggestions if they distract you.

Another nice feature is the ability for the catalog to now send you text messages. When you find an item you like, click its Availability button. You will see a small phone icon that you can click to give you a dialogue box where you can enter your mobile device number, seelct your carrier, and send a text message to yourself that includes the title and call number of the item.

These are just some of the features we think you'll enjoy!
