Tri Kappa Art Show

Now on display in the Gallery is the Tri Kappa Art Show. An annual event for over 25 years, the Tri Kappa Art Show features submissions from students in all three county high schools. The approximately 250 pieces in this year's show will be on display through Saturday, March 29.

Submissions were accepted in 12 categories:

Painting
Drawing I
Drawing II
Printmaking
Sculpture
Photography I
Photography II
Computer Graphics, Communication Arts & Graphic Design
Ceramics
Jewelry & Metalsmithing
Textile & Fiber Design
Mixed Media

Each year, a local artist is selected to act as judge for the show. This year's judge is Pat Fay, an artist with 30 years of experience.

Cash prizes are awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each category. There is also an overall "Best in Show" award, as well as a "Tri Kappa Choice" award. All winners will be honored at an Awards Ceremony and Reception, which will take place on March 26 at the Library.

Tri Kappa is a unique philanthropic organization that exists only within the state of Indiana. The service sorority was founded by a group of seven young ladies in 1901, and has since spread to include 146 Active Chapters and 114 Associate Chapters, totaling almost 9000 actively participating members.  Support for the Fine Arts has always been a main goal of Tri Kappa, which exists to bring women together to promote charity, culture, and education.

Be sure to visit the Library's Gallery between now and March 29 to view the wonderful talent that exists in our three Montgomery County high schools!

The Graphic Novel collection at CDPL is growing!

Now you can find more of the graphic novels you love,
or discover new titles!

Fables. Vol. 19, Snow WhiteRecently acquired is Bill Willingham's award-winning series Fables. Winner of 14 Eisner Awards, Fables tells the story of your favorite storybook characters in a completely new way. Snow White, Rose Red, Little Boy Blue and the Big Bad Wolf lead the community of fables living in New York City against the Adversary, who has pushed them out of their Homelands and now threatens the safety of Fabletown. If you've ever wondered what happened after "happily ever after", you'll love Fables!

CHEW : the omnivore edition. Vol. 2What if you could solve crime just by eating? In John Layman's CHEW, detective Tony Chu gets psychic impressions from everything he eats. He can take a bite of a tomato and see the dirt it grew in, the farmer who picks it, and the chef who cooked it. Or, he can eat a bite of chicken and see something else entirely. And in Tony's line of work, he has to chew some pretty unpleasant things...

Locke & key. Volume 5, ClockworksJoe Hill won an Eisner Award for best writer for his series Locke and Key. Locke and Key tells of the Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. The island of Lovecraft is home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of all.

And there's more! Catch up with your favorite superheroes:
Identity Crisis by novelist Brad Meltzer
Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar
Batman: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison
Batman: Haunted Knight by Jeph Loeb
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore

Come in and see what's new in the

In the gallery @ CDPL!

The art in the gallery was created by the Smoll Family.  All of the Smoll's are very talented in art and many other areas. Here are the descriptions of themselves they added to the show.

As a family, none of us consider ourselves artists.  Dean thinks of himself as a traveler, Tracy considers herself a teacher, Dakota has always been an adventurer, Coleman is learning to be an artist, and Emma feels that she is still a student.  However, we all believe that the world around us is amazing and we continually look for the wonder and awe in it.

Tracy is the Art Teacher at Hose Elementary.  She teaches Kindergarten and First Grade.  She also owns a small pottery business named smollthings.  She is continually amazed by the world around her.

Dean works for Nela Inc.  He travels all over the United States, Canada, South America and sometimes other places. He is a keen observer of everything around him and he keeps his camera close4.  He regularly goes for hikes, he is a birder, and he is continually amazed by the world around him.

Dakota currently lives in Spokane, Washington where he is working on getting his pilot's license.  He has wanted to fly airplanes since he was a baby.  Most summers he works in Alaska where he is continually amazed by the world around him.

Coleman is a junior at Indiana University.  His major is Graphic Design.  He is not only a student, but works at Jimmy John's as a bike deliver guy, works during the summers to save money for school and is always amazed by the world around him...and the world in his head.

Emma is a sophomore at West Lafayette High School.  She has had several amazing art teachers including Ann Stanley, Laurie Vellner, Marianne Ballenger and Verna Yoder.  Emma has always excelled at art but is more interested in science because she is continually amazed at the world around her.
