Meet Dr. Greta Binford!

Meet Dr. Greta Binford, Arachnologist, at the Carnegie Museum on Thursday, July 25 at 1 pm. After her presentation visitors will be encouraged to follow her to the Sugar Creek Nature Park to look for spiders.

A professor of Biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Greta Binford specializes in Arachnology, the study of spiders. Greta graduated from North Montgomery High School in 1983, then obtained her B.A. from Miami University. She then received her M.S. from the University of Utah and her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 2000. Binford joined the Lewis & Clark’s biology faculty in 2003 and encourages her students to learn about themselves while studying other species and continuously engages her students in scientific inquiry. The Carnegie Museum is featuring Greta and her work in the museum during the 2013 season. The exhibit will focus on Greta, her general field of Biology, and her specific research on spiders. The book Silk & Venom highlights Greta’s research and her quest to learn more about spiders.

Cambodia and Genocide

On July 25 at 6:30pm Larry Grimes will discuss Cambodia. He will talk about the 1970s genocide and how things are today. Larry grew up in Crawfordsville and was a basketball star in the late 1960s, but now has become an expert in genocide--even staying with victims in their homes in Germany, Poland, the Ukraine, Rwanda, and Cambodia, to gain first-hand knowledge of their experience. This program is recommended for adults, but children as young as 13 could benefit from it.

Never Judge a Book by its Movie

"Twelve-year-old Trevor McKinney, the son of Arlene, a single mom working two jobs, and Ricky, a deadbeat absentee dad, does not seem well-positioned to revolutionize the world. But when Trevor's social studies teacher, Reuben St. Clair, gives the class an extra-credit assignment, challenging his students to design a plan to change society, Trevor decides to start a goodwill chain. To begin, he helps out three people, telling each of them that instead of paying him back, they must "pay it forward" by helping three others."

Discover the World Through Literature

Discover Africa this month with The Camel Bookmobile, by Masha Hamilton: 
Fiona Sweeney wants to do something that matters, and she chooses to make her mark in the arid bush of northeastern Kenya. By helping to start a traveling library, she hopes to bring the words of Homer, Hemingway, and Dr. Seuss to far-flung tiny communities where people live daily with drought, hunger, and disease. Her intentions are honorable, and her rules are firm: due to the limited number of donated books, if any one of them is not returned, the bookmobile will not return. But, encumbered by her Western values, Fi does not understand the people she seeks to help. And in the impoverished small community of Mididima, she finds herself caught in the middle of a volatile local struggle when the bookmobile's presence sparks a dangerous feud between the proponents of modernization and those who fear the loss of traditional ways.

Scrabble Club

If you like to play Scrabble, you will enjoy learning how to play in a tournament. 

Saturday, July 13

From 12:00 to 12:30 there will be an introduction to competitive Scrabble for new players and any one who is interested.

Games will begin at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30.  Come and go as you can.

The cost will be $2.00 per player for the day, regardless of how may games you play.

Prizes will be awarded for first place ($5.00) and second place ($3.00), and a bonus prize ($2.00) will be awarded for each game.

Beginning Spanish

If you do not know Spanish at all, and would like to learn, this is the class for you. For $10 a class, Adriana Deck will quickly get you on your way to speaking Spanish.
