Fun With Police Sketches

Have you ever had trouble picturing a character from a novel? Brian Joseph Davis has a solution. On his Tumblr blog, The Composites, Davis uses law enforcement composite sketch software to bring your favorite characters to life, using descriptions from the book. Don't just wonder what Humbert Humbert (Lolita, Vladimir Nabakov) looked like, find out exactly how creepy he is. (On the other hand, it can be a little strange when you already have an idea of a character and the sketch is not the same, like the one of Edward Rochester of Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte.) Learn about Pakistan's culture

IREX Global Undergrad Program, a program sponsored by the U.S. State Department, has sent Tayyab Rauf of Pakistan to Wabash College for a semester of study. He is to get to know American culture and he would like to share his own culture with us.

Rauf will be at CDPL on Thursday April 12th at 5pm to share Pakistan's traditions, music, sports, famous personalities, and much more. This program is aimed at both children and adults and is sponsored by CDPL.

Purdue Extension agency: strength training sessions

The Purdue Extension agency is offering strength training sessions beginning Monday, April 2, from 11-12pm

The cost is $10.00.

Participants are asked to bring dumbells or ankle and wrist weights they might have, otherwise some will be provided. They are also asked to dress comfortably for exersize; pants or shorts that allow for stretching and bending. Finally, they are asked to bring a waterbottle or a bottle that can be filled.

Classes last approximately 45-60 minutes. The routines begin with a 5 to 10-minute warmup that may include walking, marching, light calisthenics (such as toe touches). The resistance training exercises work all the major muscle groups, utilizing a combination of dumbbells, adjustable ankle weights, and body weight. Classes conclude with a 5 to 10-minute cooldown that includes upper and lower felxibility exercises.

New Non-Fiction: It's All About the Dress

Selecting a bridal gown for that very special BIG Day can be painful and discouraging. Randy Fenoli, fashion director at Kleinfeld and star of TLC's Say Yes to The Dress, has a new book that can guide the soon-to-be bride with this important decision and avoid the distress.

Introductory Adult Computer Classes

Introductory Adult Computer Classes!
The Crawfordsville District Public Library is offering an assortment of free, introductory computer classes for adults who have little or no experience using a computer.

Adult learners will be introduced to computer basics using laptop computers with Windows 7 Microsoft operating systems. The laptops will be equipped with mice and keyboards.

Registration begins Wed., March 21

To register for a class, visit the Reference desk on the second floor of the library, or call (765)362-2242, ext. 100. No voice mail registrations accepted. Class sizes are limited to five participants per class to allow for personalized instruction. Registration is on a first come first served basis. Wait lists will be formed if classes fill.

Be a Friend of the Library!

The Friends of the Library book sale was held today, as it is every second Saturday of the month. The Friends of the Library is composed of citizens with a special interest in learning. This organization supports the library's mission both through their volunteer efforts and financial assistance. They have provided for the library in the past computers for the children’s room, a CD player, and a refrigerator for the staff room. They have a special interest in encouraging the love of reading in children and occasionally provide extra funds for events or refreshments in the Children’s room.

Annual membership is as low as $4.00, or add yourself to the mailing list for free and receive the monthly newsletter to stay informed of events at the library. Tri Kappa Art Show

This annual exhibit is an amazing combination of artistic talent of students from all over the county which will be on display through Saturday during regular library hours. An awards reception is planned for from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday (March 7)  in the lower level of the Library. Everyone is invited. Tri Kappa Sorority members and the three county high schools art teachers have readied an amazing body of work for viewing. Categories include: Ceramics, Computer Graphics-Graphic Design & Communication Arts, Drawing 1 and 2, Jewelry & Metalsmithing, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography 1 and 2, Printmaking, Sculpture and Textile & Fiber Design.

Ribbons and prizes for first, second, third place and honorable mention in each category are given out at the awards reception. There is also an award for Best of Show. Each year Tri Kappa hires an experienced, independent artist to judge the student work. The judge chosen this year is Kim VanArsdell.Before taking over the helm as executive director of the non-profit artists’ co-operative Athens Arts approximately a year and a half ago, Kim VanArsdell was self-employed as a stained glass artist concentrating on public commission works. VanArsdell, a native of Frankfort, has resided in Crawfordsville for more than 30 years. Her stained glass windows and lamps are found in public and private collections throughout Indiana including the Mulberry Library in Clinton County and the Frankfort Community Public Library. VanArsdell attended Indiana University at Bloomington, where she majored in painting and minored in printmaking. She has additional training in secondary art education from IU. She also is an associated artist with Susie Gibbs Framing and Art Gallery at Lafayette.

The Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery is open during normal library hours, which are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

March is Women's History Month!

This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is Women’s Education-Women’s Empowerment, a subject that is at the heart of the work of one of the first feminists. Mary Wollstonecraft was born in England in 1759. Mary struck out on her own at an early age to work, eventually setting up a school with her sisters and friend Fanny Blood. When the school failed and Mary became dissatisfied with her options for employment, she decided to become a writer. She was in France during the Revolution and wrote An Historical and Moral View of the French Revolution, which was published in 1794. Her most famous work, though, was A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects. Written in 1792, Wollstonecraft argues that women should be educated since they will in turn educate children, and women can and should be equals to men in some areas of life. Mary’s dramatic personal life overshadowed her work for years after her death (she had numerous love affairs and an illegitimate daughter in addition to her daughter with philosopher William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, author of Frankenstein) but her ideas found life again with the women’s suffrage movement in the late nineteenth century. (Read about Crawfordsville’s own famous suffragist, Elizabeth Boynton Harbert, at our Local History blog).
                 Visit the library and check out Mary Wollstonecraft for yourself. Lyndall Gordon’s Vindication: A Life of Mary Wollstonecraft was on the New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2005 list. A fictional account of Mary’s life, Vindication, was written in 1993 by South Bend teacher Frances Sherwood. And Mary’s most influential work can be found through interlibrary loan or as a free download from google books.

In the Gallery: Indiana and Beyond

Indiana and Beyond


Two Indiana Artists display their paintings in the Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library.

Audrey Elaine is a Hoosier Artist, born and raised in Indiana. Retired after 23 years in the United States Postal Service, she now devotes her time to painting landscapes of Indiana in oil, watercolor and acrylic. Her professional memberships include: The Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Artists, Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, Indiana Arts/Crafts and the Incorporated Sugar Creek Art Center. Audrey has exhibited work in shows across the United States and all over Indiana, including Eli Lilly & Company, Indianapolis Artsgarden, Talbot Street Art Fair, Covered Bridge Festival, Orchard in Bloom, Prairie Town Market and Park Full of Art.

Alyce J. Miller, also a Hoosier Artists, has over 50 paintings on display in the Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, many with Agricultural and floral themes. Alyce comes from an artistic family and has been painting for about nine years now. She exhibits in several counties and is a member of the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown and the Tri County Art Group.

In the Mary Bishop Memorial Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, Audrey and Alyce currently have many lovely paintings on display; many of them are available for purchase.

Indiana and Beyond will run through Feb 16, 2012, and you can view the paintings during normal library hours, Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

St. Bernard's Church...on Washington Street?

Take a look at our newest addition to WhatWasThere.com: St Bernard's Church

The library has recently obtained a postcard of one of Crawfordsville's historic structures: St. Bernard's Catholic Church. This church, which sat on the corner of Washington and Pike Streets (where Chase Bank is now) was dedicated with much fanfare in 1876. The date written on the postcard -- 1874 -- is not the date of the picture, however, but rather the beginning of the construction. If you take a closer look at the postcard, you can see tracks running down the middle of Washington Street, and wires overhead. These tracks and wires were for the interurban trains that began servicing Crawfordsville in the early years of the 20th century. This view is one of the rare clear images that remain of the now demolished church.

Photography books

New to the world of digital photography? CDPL has several books to guide one on this adventure!

Craig Alesse in his book Don't Take My Picture: How to Take Fantastic Digital Photos of Family and Friends (And Have Fun Too) advises photographers to take lots of pictures and from various angles. He lists pointers on devising picture compositions, taking group shots, capturing kids at their best, and many other topics.

This book and many other photography books can be found in CDPL's non-fiction collection. Borrow some now to start capturing digital lasting memories.

Agriculture in Montgomery County!

Opening to the public on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County, this exhibit will cover the history of Agriculture in Montgomery County as well as the state of Agriculture today.

To create this exhibit we need your help. If you have photographs of the Montgomery County Fair or photographs of local people at the Indiana State Fair, the museum would be interested in borrowing them for the exhibit. Also, old farm tools, maps, Almanacs, FFA Jackets and more are needed to complete the visual picture of Montgomery County Agriculture. Any items from the 1979 Farm Progress Show here in the county would be most welcome. Items can be donated to the museum or loaned to the museum for the duration of the exhibit.

In the Gallery -- January

Checkout the display at the Mary Bishop Gallery at the Crawfordsville District Public Library highlighting the work of Crawfordsville school children!

The display features work from students in kindergarten through high school. There will be a special reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the library before the Crawfordsville School Corporation's monthly board meeting, which will be in the basement.

The Gallery wil display the artwork through the end of January.
